Jim Thompson, Savage Night

Started April 19 Finished April 20, 2004; 155 pages. Posted 08 May 2004

Not to cheapen the passing of Big Tom, but Ive figured out that his death was not the terrible thing I prophesized from a week or so ago.

After all the emotional upheaval of the crazy ex-girlfriend contacting me yet again, I was dumped by The Girlfriend last night.

I cant say this came as a surprise. We havent had any fights, and things have been just fine, thanks, but weve also spent every night together since the end of December. What used to be delight turned into routine.

The love and interest is still there, but she also has been in steady relationships since shes been allowed to have relationships. Shes feeling antsy, I guess.

There are other things as well, things like the very real possibility of Columbia saying come on down, and me having to split in a hurry. Or maybe its PMS, as thats always an easy thing to blame.

I figure its because Im a bad person, and God hates me. In the mean time, were bound to stay close, as we cant seem to keep our goddamn hands off each other.

But it still hurts.

Of course, this means that Ill have plenty of time to catch up on these reviews, so it wont be the weekly posting that has happened as of late.

Youll excuse me if Im not exactly fucking enthusiastic about that.

And tonight can only be worse. Savage Night, Jim? Call me melodramatic, but I would have traded with your main character in a heartbeat. After all, the only thing that happened to him was that he got shot. And stabbed. And hit with a blackjack in the skull. Lucky bastard.

So tonight, for the first time in a long time, Ill sleep alone. Perhaps pornography will help. And a big bottle of whiskey.

Only one way to find out.

Rating: Worth used.
