Jamie Delano, "John Constantine Hellblazer: Original Sins"

Started March 2 Finished March 2, 2002; 254 pages. Posted 3 March 2002

"The Jeffersons" split from "All in the Family." "The Ropers" sprang from "Threes Company" and later spun again for "Threes a Crowd." "Joanie Loves Chachi" came forth out of the ashes of "Happy Days." And John Constantine got his own comic series out of an appearance in "Swamp Thing."

The problem is, most spin-offs suck, and while this isnt as bad as, say, "Joanie Loves Chachi," its simply not that good either.

But I suppose part of the problem is that this is by a different writer. Alan Moore created the character, but DC owns the rights so they can do whatever they like with him, such as have a substandard writer do a bunch of lame gothic horror stories with Constantine as the centerpiece.

Okay, maybe not totally lame, but not all that great, either. Theres some semblance of an overarching storyline in this volume, but Delano seems to sometimes forget about it, which totally throws the story off track. Mostly he just wanders around speaking Cockney, and trouble eventually finds him. It was weird how fast I could get into the story and then totally lose interest. And when Swamp Thing does finally show up, its on the last page to be continued.

Too bad Im not going to buy the next book.

Rating: Work in a used bookstore and get it for cheap. Or dont.
