David Mack, Kabuki Images

Started January 19 Finished January 19, 2004; 50 pages. Posted 01 February 2004

Last year I wrote about the Graphic Novel collection of David Mack and his flagship title, Kabuki. At the time, Mack was pretty new to me — I had only found out about him because he did a short writing stint on Daredevil. Back then, his style was intriguing — he didnt use the standard nine-panel grid, instead using an entire page for a multi-media painting utilizing archetypes, allegories, and ethnic folklore.

Which is fine until you realize he does it for every single page.

But he recently finished another stint on Daredevil, and he has this follow-up to the Kabuki comic and Im starting to wonder if he isnt a one-trick pony. Worse is that both this comic and his new run on Daredevil seemed totally unnecessary — in fact it seemed like a way to make a quick buck and make some filler issues.

The only saving grace for both this title and his work at Marvel, is that he seems like he spent a lot of time on these projects with the art.

Too bad he didnt spend more time with figuring out an actual interesting story line.

Rating: Worth working in a used bookstore and getting for cheap.
