Harvey Kurtzman and Will Elder, Little Annie Fanny, Volume 1 1962-1970

Started January 30 Finished January 30, 2004; 224 pages. Posted 02 March 2004

I dont pretend to be any different from most men — I like womens breasts. So when this collection came in to the store, I jumped at it. But its not just that just that elders art is so good, its the team-up with former MAD staffer Harvey Kurtzman that appealed to me.

And the fact that there are a shitload of womens breasts in here.

I havent seen a whole lot of Little Annie Fanny, the comic strip published in Playboy, and the fact that these were all published before I was born meant it would be a chance for me to read the articles. Kurtzman has done some amazing work with political satire, and this is all set in the tumultuous sixties.

The sad thing though, is this is not brilliant satire. In fact, for the most part, this is actually pretty lame and tame. Out of 220-odd pages, only about 25 of these have any bite to them. Whats worse, the aforementioned breasts that I spoke so fondly of, are so predominant that it becomes dull.

Thats something that should never happen.

Really, the only saving grace of this book comes at the end where they have explanations of the art, pointing out caricatures of people drawn in the background that you may have missed, such as Gregory Peck, Peter Sellers, or Martin Luther King. Its fairly odd to think the history behind the cartoon is more interesting and engaging than the actual cartoon.

Even after considering all the breasts.

Rating: Worth Flea Market Prices.
